The Triqui originate from a small area of the Sierra Mixteca of Oaxaca. Triqui migrants have traveled north to Baja California and to the Pacific Seaboard—Oregon as well as California—for more than three decades; and the number of Triqui migrants settling in the United States continues to grow.
In Mexico, Oaxacan indigenous communities have experienced periods of conflict over land and other issues. Triqui migrants in California, like other indigenous Oaxacan transnational communities, are involved in the over-arching emergence of a pan-indigenous presence in “Oaxacalifornia”.
